uniCenta oPOS
The story behind the uniCenta open source EPoS...
We discovered, some time ago, an
open source
Electronic Point of Sale(EPoS)
application called Tina/Libre POS, when looking for a
solution for a leading leisure industry client in Europe..., and
since then have kept an eye on its progress. In the last few years the Tina/Libre POS project became
Openbravo POS
and has evolved into a very usable, mature and robust application. Still open source, and with
almost 10,000 installations per month (according
to Openbravo web site), we chose to use it as the
basis of our enhanced solution for our
Partner Tech PT-6200
project.
uniCenta oPOS is an amended and extended version
of Openbravo POS and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It is a
software-based Electronic Point of Sale(EPoS) application that
replaces a proprietary hardware Electronic Cash Register(ECR).
It is developed specifically in Java and is based
on proven development standards – making it easier to manage - and
can run on almost any Point of Sale hardware.

uniCenta oPOS is
a robust, commercial-grade, business-ready
Electronic Point of Sale (EPoS) application,
based on the proven Openbravo POS open source solution,
and has been localised for the UK & Europe (but
easily re-configured for many other markets).
Suitable for use in the Hospitality, Leisure & Retail
markets it is an ideal entry-level solution for a new
business, for those seeking to move from a low-tech Electronic Cash Register(ECR)
operation or as the basis for integrating POS with other
Line of Business applications into their business. |
uniCenta oPOS
offers numerous benefits:
- Low-Cost/No-Cost - it's open source
available under GPL licensing terms
- Easy to install & manage - standard application install
takes less than 5 minutes
- No annual license or maintenance fees - so no vendor Lock-in
if you choose to go it alone
- Specially designed for Touch-screen operation - clear,
concise layouts and controls
- No need for separate or dedicated hardware – very likely it
can use your existing PC or POS terminal
- Uses POS industry standard interfaces to hardware - ESC/Pos®; JavaPOS, Surepos
makes for easy configuration
So what's the difference between Openbravo POS and uniCenta POS?
- Openbravo requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels. uniCenta oPOS doesn't. All screen
and form controls have been re-worked to fit a minimum of 800x600
pixels and automatically scale to fit higher resolutions. We even have a full version running on Partner
Tech's EM-200 10" inch 1024x600 pixel screen tablet (it's like
an iPad on steroids!).
- uniCenta oPOS can kick a Cashdrawer directly through a POS
terminal's Serial/COM port, unlike Openbravo POS which can only do
this through the attached Cashdrawer/Serial port of a printer.
- Additional COM ports added - Openbravo POS has only 4; we
have increased this to 6
- Line Discount & Total Discount functions have been added as
standard functions to the Sales Ticket screen
- Single button access to the Windows Keyboard has been added
to the Sales Ticket screen
- uniCenta has been localised for UK and has UK currency notes
and coinage graphics, as standard install, instead of euro
(this is easily changed and both are supplied).
- Optional pre-configured database is supplied for Hospitality
with Categories; Products; Attributes & etc.
- Royalty/License free Hospitality graphics Bonus Pack
